Home Remedies for Asthma

Asthma is a disease which affects lungs resulting in difficulty breathing. Asthma occurs when there is an obstruction in the flow of air supply in the lungs. Most common symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath and chest pain(tightness) and wheezing. Asthma can be acute or chronic and can be triggered by allergies, air pollution, respiratory infections etc.


There are certain medical treatments available for asthma. While some simple natural remedies can also provide quick relief from symptoms.

Here are best herbal home remedies for asthma.


1. Use Ginger
Ginger is a well-known natural herb used for treating various ailments including asthma. You can use ginger in many ways to cure asthma.
  • Mix equal quantities of ginger juice, pomegranate juice and honey. Take one tablespoon of this mixture twice or three times a day. 
  • Alternatively, you could mix one teaspoon ground ginger in one and a half cups of water and take one tablespoon of this mixture at bedtime. 
  • Cut one inch of ginger into small pieces and add it to a pot of boiling water. Let it steep for five minutes, allow it to cool down and then drink it. 
  • To detoxify your lungs, mix one tablespoon of ginger juice and one tablespoon of honey with two tablespoon of fenugreek seeds soaked in water overnight. Drink this solution every morning and evening. 
  • You can also eat raw ginger mixed with salt.
2. Fruitful Figs
Taking figs on empty stomach brings relief from a number of ailments including asthma. The nutritional properties of figs promote respiratory health and help drain phlegm and alleviate breathing difficulties. 

Soak 3-4 dry figs after cleaning them properly in warm water overnight. Figs play a pivotal role in reducing the various symptoms of asthma attacks. They also help in curing the different symptoms associated with asthma. 

3. Drink lemonade
Dilute the juice of 1 lemon in 1 glass water. Drink this mixture during meals. Lemon kills the germs, which are present in the mucus underlining the air vessels and works as an antiseptic.

4. Eat Fish
Omega-3 fatty acids in fishes like salmon, cod, sardines, mackerel and tuna will help your lungs react better to irritants that cause asthma symptoms. It can also reduce airway narrowing and inflammation. 

5. Drink Garlic
Garlic is strong natural antibacterial and helps to clear congestion in your lungs, giving you quick relief from asthma symptoms. Just boil 10 to 15 cloves of garlic in 30-40 ml milk and drink it once a day. Also prepare ginger tea and add 2-3 minced garlic cloves to it, drink this tea in morning as well as evening.

6. Three cups of Coffee
The caffeine in regular coffee can help prevent and control asthma attacks. Hot coffee also will relax and clear the airways to help you to breathe easier. The stronger the coffee, the better the result. But try not to drink more than three cups of black coffee in a day. If you do not like coffee, you can opt for a cup of hot black tea.

7. Drumstick soup
Prepare a soup of the bunch of leaves and 180ml water. Boil for 5 minutes. Let it cool and add seasoning, pepper and lemon juice for extra flavour.

8. Honey for help
Honey is one of the oldest natural cures for asthma. The unique natural properties of honey help reduce asthma symptoms. Just inhaling the smell of honey produces positive results for some people. Sip a glass of hot water mix with one teaspoon of honey before going to bed. It effectively reduces the accumulated mucous lining.

9. Sooth with Cinnamon 

Taking one teaspoon of honey with one-half teaspoon of cinnamon powder before going to bed is also very effective in treating asthma. This will help remove phlegm from your throat and allow you to sleep better.

10. Onions
Onions have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce constriction of the airways when suffering from asthma. Also, the sulfur content in onions help decrease inflammation in the lungs. Simply eat raw onions to clear your air passage ways for better breathing. If you cannot bear the taste of raw onions, try eating cooked onions.

11. Liquorice
This is an herb that works wonder as an antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant agent, as well as an immune stimulator. Thus, it plays an important role in reducing the symptoms of asthma.

12. Mustard Oil & camphor massage
When having an asthma attack, massing with mustard oil will help clear the respiratory passages and restore normal breathing. Heat some mustard oil with a little camphor and gently massage it into the chest and upper back. Do this several times a day until the symptoms subside

Besides these remedies you should also watch your diet. Your diet must include fresh fruits, grains, green vegetables, seeds, and sprouts. You should avoid rice, lentils, curd, sugar, fried foods, coffee, tea, sauces, alcoholic beverages, processed foods, and condiment pickles.

Maintaining proper hygiene is also very important to avoid asthma attacks. Sleep in a clean bed. Use separate towels, bed sheets, pillows, and other items of daily use. Avoid dust, insects, pets, plants, and strong smells of perfumes, flowers, or chemical sprays. Keep yourself clean, bathe properly, and avoid catching cold. You should use warm water to bathe if you have a tendency to catch cold.

Fasting is seen to be beneficial in asthma cases. You can fast for once a week to relieve asthma issues. Breathe fresh air, do light exercise, and maintain healthy posture to avoid asthma attacks.
